part 1

Srimad Bhagavatam 3.32.34-36

By performing fruitive activities and sacrifices, by distributing charity, by performing austerities, by studying various literatures, by conducting philosophical research, by controlling the mind, by subduing the senses, by accepting the renounced order of life and by performing the prescribed duties of one’s social order; by performing the different divisions of yoga practice, by performing devotional service and by exhibiting the process of devotional service containing the symptoms of both attachment and detachment; by understanding the science of self-realization and by developing a strong sense of detachment, one who is expert in understanding the different processes of self-realization realizes the Supreme Personality of Godhead as He is represented in the material world as well as in transcendence.

The following is an email message Balarama Prabhu received from His Holiness Prahladananda Sami regarding Maharaja’s reading program. Balarama Prabhu’s message is quoted by “>”.

================================================

Dear Balaram dasa,
Please accept my greetings and the blessings of Lord Sri Krishna. All
glories to Srila Prabhupada!

> Maharaja, I was emailing you regarding your reading program ,how you study
> Srila Prabhuapada’s books. How many hours a day do you study? How many of
> Prabhupadas books do you study in a year? etc. I am seeking Any
> information that will help me.

Thank you for your letter. My daily reading program is:

10 verses from the Bhagavada Gita. Sanskrit, translation, purport.
Reciting 1 chapter from the BG by memory.
1 chapter from the Nectar of Devotional
10 verses from the SB
1 chapter of the Krishna Book
25 verses from the Caitanya Caritamrta.

> I do not recall if you were mentioning it in one of your classes or if one
> of your disciple’s told me. I would really like to memorize krishna lila
> ,stories in general.So I was just seeking some advice,how to,some tips?

Practice regularly memorizing Krishna lila and review constantly what you
have memorized.

> Also a devotee was saying that reading keeps us philosophically fit in
> krishna consciousness ,why is this important? why is it important to read
> and deeply study Srila Prabhupada’s book’s? Also how do I get a deep
> attraction and taste for reading?

We are trying to see reality through the eyes of the scriptures so we
may perform pure devotional service in Krishna consciousness.

As we become purified, gradually taste and attraction will develop.
When that taste and attraction has not fully developed, we can read and
study to strengthen our intelligence and further our conviction and
practical service to our spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, and Lord
Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s mission.

Hope all is well.

Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada,
Prahladananda Swami

>.. what is the sequence that a
> devotee should read Srila Prabhupada’s books?  And if you don’t mind, what
> is your reading schedule? Thank you very much.

I have been here in Melbourne, Australia for over a week, which lately is a long time for me to spend in one place.  The article that was recently published on the “Sampradaya Sun” was written by me about 4 or 5 years ago for the European Leadership and Management meeting that takes place each year.  The idea was not to criticize the leadership of ISKCON, but to see ways of improving it.

Upon arriving in Melbourne, I went to the New Nandagram farm about 2 hours away and give a yoga seminar with lectures on Krishna consciousness to about 15-20 people.  As Kali-yuga progresses, we can only expect people to become more and more receptive to Krishna consciousness.

Tommorrow, I go to Sydney and to the project at Govinda Valley where I will give lectures to the devotees and teach them some yoga.  This year I passed my certification test for Iyengar yoga.

Thursday 31st, January 2009.
I awoke. It was the final day of the year so there was some means to celebrate, at least sentimentally. Prahladananda Swami gave a brilliant class. It was so witty and impacting that, at the end, everyone was speechless. The sweetness only continued when, after class, Mahavana gave me some honey coconut balls (one of my favourite)….

Currently I’m in Portland and today I will give an ayurveda class at temple we have in Hillsboro. Tommorrow I’ll give a Bhagavad class at the same temple. I leave for Los Angeles on Monday. On Tuesday evening I fly to Auckland, New Zealand.

I’m preparing for the GBC meetings in Mayapur which go from February 6-17. Eleven devotees sent me requests to become candidates for sannyasa and this alone requires time to go through the procedures so that their candidacy can be reviewed by the Sannyasa Standing Committee in Mayapur.

Plus, as the Chairman of the GBC Appointment Committee and the Guru Services Committee, I have enough service in preparing for the meetings, what to speak during the meetings.

I am pleased to announce that there are two new ISKCON sannyasis.  Purnachandra dasa is now Purnachandra Goswami and Jagat Guru dasa is now Bhakti Narasimha Swami.

Don’t be too quick to react to the circumstances that we are being put into by our past activities and desires, think of what Lord Krishna wants us to do following in the footprints of previous authorities. We have to pray for Lord Krishna to give us intelligence, otherwise, Maya is always with us waiting for a chance to bewilder us. Maya is also advertising to “Come and enjoy,” that is why Lord Krishna is very please with the efforts of His devotees who tell others, “Come and serve Lord Krishna.”

Happy Rama Navami

After leaving Hong Kong in February I traveled to Mayapur for the annual GBC Body meetings. Since I am the Sannyasa Minister I spend part of the meetings with the GBC Sannyasa Standing Committee reviewing sannyasa candidates. There are about 15 sannyasa candidates on the waiting list and candidate from Nigeria, Africa, Parikshit dasa, was approved to take sannyasa this year. The meetings that last for ten days are rather intense as I usually have many extra meetings beside the ones that are during the normal scheduled times.

After the GBC meetings I traveled with Virabahu Prabhu and Dhruva dasa from Australia to Jagannatha Puri where we bathed in the sea and took treatment from Madhusudana Roy’s assistances who are expert in acupressure and massage. From there Dhruva and myself traveled to Ahmedabad where there is a large ISKCON temple with beautiful Sri Sri Radha Krsna Deities as well as Sri Sri Gaura Nitai and Sri Sri Sita Rama Laksmana and Hanuman and a large Gopal Deity.

A devotee Rajasuya Prabhu accompanied Dhruva and myself to visit in Rajasthan a Sufi mystic who extracts kidney and gallbladder stones as well as cancers from peoples bodies. He is a very pious man who has several goshalas where he is protecting cows. He has been friends of the devotees for many year. Dhruva and myself witnessed his mystic cures which seemed genuine.

A couple of days later we went to Vrindavan and along with Nikunjavasini devi dasi a Srila Prabhupada disciple from Radhadesh in Belgium visited Radha Kunda and had prasadam at the Govardhan Palace which is managed by Kesava Bharati Maharaja.

I have been in Radhadesh since the end of March and have each week once or twice distributed books in Dutch or French speaking areas of the Benelux.  The college is going on well here with about 12 students. Three times a week I have been teaching from 15 to 25 students yoga in the BKS Iyengar style of teaching.

I will be in Radhadesh until the 27 of April when I travel to Poland  to attend a conference on

yoga in Wroclaw as well as the devotees annual festival. I will be in Poland until the 21of

May when I return to Radhadesh. My Vyasa Puja will be celebrated in Radhadesh on the 25

of May. On the 29 of May I travel with Lilasuka Prabhu, a disciple of HH Bhakti Caru

Maharaja to Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Bosnia until the 16 of June.

From 17 of June to the 20 of June I will teach a course for the Bhaktivedanta College on the

2 Canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam. Afterwards I should be going to Spain for about 10 days

and then back to Radhadesh. From Radhadesh I probably be traveling to Finland, Estonia,

Moscow, Perm and then to the UK.  I will return to Radhadesh for Janmastami and their 25

anniversary of Radhadesh.
